Singing Sensation Sayuri Serasinghe

Sayuri Serasinghe is making waves in the Derana London Star, having been voted top in the fourth round of the popular reality show that seeks to showcase the best of Sri Lankan talent in the UK among 24 contestants. The talented young singer was born in April 1986 in Colombo. Her parents, Dr. Palitha Serasinghe and Dr. Soma Serasinghe, both Ayurvedic doctors were doing their further studies in Japan so Sayuri spent her early years there.

From her very young days, Sayuri was inclined towards dance and music, and returning to Sri Lanka at the age of 5, she studied at St. Lawrence's School, Colombo 6 continuing to show her musical talents.

At school not only was she academically gifted, she was also a violinist in the school orchestra, an actress in school plays and a flautist in the school oriental band.

Her parents encouraged her by sending her to Kalabumi, academy of music, to learn North Indian Classical Music in vocals and violin, under music maestro Rohana Weerasinghe. She also became proficient in Uda rata, pahatha rata and Sabaragamu dance under Kalashuri Widyaratne Fernando and performed in many shows including Kalaa bhumi piya naguma, even going on a month-long tour of Japan with the Widyaratne Fernando troupe.

Her family migrated to UK when Sayuri was 15 and made their home in London. Based in Essex she schooled in Caterham High School, Clayhall and later went on to King's College, University of London to study Biomedical Science. Currently she is reading for a Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Science with Management at Kingston University.

Actively involved in cultural events in and around London, she has also trained and presented younger students in many cultural shows including the Cricket Festival in 2009.

Now through Derana London Star, Sayuri aims to take her musical career to the next level and reach a wider audience around the world.
