Janelayen Paninnada and Antigone wins 9 awards at the State Drama Festival 2011

State Drama Festival 2011 was held at the John De Silva Commemoration Theatre on January 17-24, 2012 organized by Cultural Affairs Department. Under the long drama category, Adawage Dawasaka Antigani- by Priyankara Rathnayake on January 17, Guththilaya- Herath Wanindrasinghe on January 18, Gladiator Premaya- Namal Jayasinghe and Prasanna Mahagamage on January 19, Janelayen Paninnada- Dhanushika Nayana Kumari on January 20, Bonikki Gedara- Jagath Bandara on January 21, Suddek Oba Amathay- Udayasiri Wickramaratna on January 22, Happy Journey - Jahan Sri Kantha on January 23 was staged. Under the short drama category, Mage Kalaye Weerayek by- Sudath Abesiriwardana, Ekalaiwan(Tamil)- by T. Kayuriya, Api by Rohande Silva, Kadalin Akkarei Powor(Tamil) by K. Thirichchenduran staged on January 24.

A Day Like Today's 'ANTIGONE' by Priyankara Rathnayake

The great Greek tragic play writer Sophocles "ANTIGONE" go on the boards at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on Jan 27 at 3.30 & 7.00pm. "ADA VAGE DAVASAKA ANTIGONE" [A day like today's "antigone"] presented by Academic Players and drama and theatre & Image Arts unit,University of Kalaniya and directed by senior lecturer Priyankara Rathnayaka.

The play was based on the power struggle between the state & society.
Who is the hero? what is the justice ? what is the task of civilians and the task of the ruler? These are the some issues arose from the 'ANTIGONE '. This play was translated into Sinhala language by well known writer & poet Ariyawansa Ranaweera. Music is composed by Pramith Dahanayaka, Choreography created by Harshani Rathnayaka & Priyankara Rathnayaka.





The cast includes Wishvajith Gunasekara, Prasadini Athapathu, Priyantha Sirikumara, Thumindu Dodantenna, Kaushalya Mendis, Saman Malalasekara ,Vijitha Bandara, Thusitha laknath Gayan Randeera, Harshika Rathnayaka, Samadhi Laksiri and University Undergraduates. "ANTIGONE" is sponsored by Facilitating Local Initiatives for Conflict Transformation (FLICT) Organization.

Oedipus by Academic Players, Drama and Theatre and Image Arts Unit, University of Kelaniya

Sophocles most famous play Oedipus was staged at Lionel Wendt on May 12 & 13. This was directed by Priyankara Rathnayaka and presented by Academic Players, Drama & Theatre and Image Arts Unit, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka.

Priyankara Ratnayake is a senior lecturer of the Department of Drama and Theatre and Image Arts of the University of Kelaniya. Ratnayaka has remodeled two of Sophocles’ tragedies, Antigone and Oedipus the King, on the local stage with the assistance of Drama, Theatre and Image Arts Unit and Academic Players Club. The two plays was staged along with the award winning 'Janelen Paninnada' at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on May 11, 12, 13 and 14 at 3.30 and 6.30 pm. The plays are staged with the intention of promoting awareness among theatre students at GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level.







Based on Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Oedipus the King is translated by Siri Ediriweera. Tumindu Dodantenna, Gihan Fernando, 1Prasadini Atapattu, Kaushalya Mendis, Samadhi Laksiri, Vijitha Bandara, Gayan Ranidhira, Harshika Rathnayaka and Saman Malalasekara will perform in the play.
